The wildebeest is frequently seen on game drive and, since they are not one of the animals on most people's tick lists, not a lot of time is spent watching the behaviour of these fascinating animals.
During mating season, the males will establish a territory that he will defend against other males while they compete amongst themselves for the female's attention.
Determining dominance and defending territories can lead to bloodthirsty fights. A couple of months ago, we were privileged enough to witness one of these fights. When we arrived at the scene, the two males were already locked in combat. They were so committed to the fight, they did not even notice that they had spectators. Blood was already flowing from both where their sharp horns were cutting each others' skins.
We watched this encounter for about five minutes until they took the fight deeper into the bush where we could not see or hear them anymore. At Kaingo, you never know what to expect when heading out on a game drive, and this was indeed one of those unexpected and fascinating sightings.
